Dear Fred

How do you encourage people who are prone to depression?

Fred's Response

St. John of the Cross spoke of the "dark night of the soul." I think that living in a fallen world makes us prone to seeing the sadness around us. Some of us are more prone to depression through our temperament. I find that several things help me through the dark times: prayer, scripture, good conversation and some excitement in my life. Being immobilized for nearly 4 years I have experienced more frustration than ever in my life. I have had to discipline my thought life so that I don't sink into depression. My daughter Brenda finds that praise music helps her. If this persists I would recommend that you talk with your pastor or a Christian counselor. Bless.
