The Gift of Life

This is a personal story out of my early manhood that I have never told, simply because it was personal and was a very satisfying experience that didn't need any broadcasting.

When I was a young man in the life insurance business I went into a lawyer's office where he and his daughter practiced together. As I spoke to them they were obviously upset and asked me what my blood type was. Although it was a very strange question I knew that they earnestly wanted my answer.

When I told him he said, "That is exactly what we need." And then he said, "My brother is dying in the St. Thomas hospital and must have blood immediately. Will you give him some?" I was happy to oblige. We immediately got in the car and went out. Without doing anything other than taking off my coat I lay down on a cot - a mobile cot - beside him and they transferred the blood directly from me to him because it was that urgent. He lived and was very grateful for the transfusion and once mentioned that he would be happy to pay me. But he saw that his gratitude was enough and financial payment would be inappropriate.

I have never seen him again but the experience has produced total satisfaction. When our souls were in need of a donation for our soul, Christ shed His blood. When our souls were perishing, Christ provided a way for salvation and eternal life. Christ gave us something that we cannot buywe can only receive it by faithit came from his grace.

Think of those who have given you the gift of life, the gift of education, the gift of love and thank them this week. How can you be a channel of blessing to others this week?
