Power of Love
Since April of 2002 I have been hospitalized several times and experienced serious physical limitations. I like to say that I am "disabled, but not sick." In thinking about what I have learned 5 principles become clear. In the next five weekly thoughts I will explore them with you.
The Power of Love
Love creates an environment that strengthens the will to live. Love brings joy in your life when there is little to rejoice about. We appreciate being loved so much that we sometimes forget our responsibility for being loved. Those who love us want us to live, not die.
Doctors say that many old people who are said to die of "natural causes" really die of loneliness. Current medical research shows that we can literally die of broken hearts. As God's greatest gift to us is His love, so our greatest gift to one another should be our love. Love does not need to be earned; it is given. And so, no matter how incapacitated you are, you can still experience being loved ---- and loving.
Love is the strongest sustaining emotion we experience. Acts of love are as important as words of love. One of my favorite times of the day is when Brenda comes in, pats me on the arm and kisses me on the forehead, saying, "I will see you in the morning." When I was pronounced "dying" by my doctor, our daughter said, "No, I will take him home and he will live." That is exactly what happened. There is power in love.
This Valentine's Day is the first in 67 years that I have not had my Valentine with me. Everyday now is Valentine's Day for her, filled with love.
This week: 1) Consider who you love and who loves you. What are the responsibilities of each? 2) How do you recognize Gods love for you?
