Dear Fred

Tips on conflict management in a church?

Fred's Response

There are right and wrong conflicts. The right ones are conscientious differences on matters all the way from theology to property maintenance. These differences should not cause hostility or incrimination of others. If they do, it is generally an evidence of a power struggle. Recently I consulted on such a conflict where two power brokers got the bylaws of the church changed to put them permanently in charge. To me, such a conflict and action is a grievous sin. Power struggles should never exist between Christians. One of the first steps in dissolving conflict is serious prayer between those affected. Proper scriptural interpretation should be sought from those not involved. Patience should be exercised, for hasty decisions are often wrong.
