Ask Fred > Ethics > What does selfishness look like?

Dear Fred
The second commandment says "Love thy neighbor as thyself." This is a pretty clear statement. Can you shed some light on why some religions equate taking care of ones own needs as selfishness?
Fred's Response
“As†means, to me, as at the same time. Selfishness means I think of only myself. Unselfishness means I think of others at the same time and equally. I am not concerned about what other religions teach. I am concerned what the Bible teaches. We are told if a person fails to provide for his household he has denied the faith. I am part of my household and therefore I feel I should take reasonable care of myself.
