Dear Fred

Is it a sin for a christian to drink any alcohol at all?

Fred's Response

For me, whiskey is out. It is the source of too much human misery. As to beer and wine, including champagne, I understand from friends that in Germany, the devout Christians freely drink beer and in France they drink wine. But certainly not to excess. I doubt that Christ turned the water into grape juice for it said that He turned it into wine and those who drank it said it was the best wine of the evening. No doubt, most people in that day drank wine as a beverage, but not as an intoxicant. I had my first taste of wine in a fundamental church that didn't believe in serving grape juice at communion but insisted on wine even though it was during prohibition and one of the deacons had to make it secretly in his home! The Scriptures have several commands against using alcoholic beverages to excess. In fact, it gives a few examples of those who have done immoral things due to excessive alcohol. We Christians must be careful not to become legalistic and restrict ourselves to things which are not sin, but simply traditional positions which become legalistic.
