What is your belief concerning the necessity or importance of a believer's baptism?

According to scripture I believe baptism is one of the church ordinances, but not a requirement for salvation. It is public evidence of the death of the old man and the rebirth of the new. I have had friends who in their adult life have asked to be rebaptized because they didn't believe that their infant or childhood baptism was a response to a spiritual experience.
