Dear Fred

How would you define Christian maturity and what makes for a mature Christian?

Fred's Response

I personally believe that in this life maturity is a road, not a destination. Various Christian communities create lists of behaviors or beliefs that constitute maturity, but that only addresses the external. For example, ways to dress, permissible forms of entertainment, number of times in corporate worship. There are some fine people among us who believe in sinless perfection, but that is not my experience. I don't think we can be mature AS Christ, but mature IN Christ. For me the basic element of maturity is the evidence of the fruit of the spirit in a Christian's life. If I am more consistently demonstrating the fruit, I am growing in maturity.
